Municipality of Baião awarded the ECOXXI Green Flag

The municipality of Baião has once again been awarded the ECOXXI Green Flag as a result of the assessment of 21 local sustainability indicators, which identify as Eco-municipalities those that implement exemplary policies in areas such as environmental education for sustainable development, nature conservation, air and water quality, energy, sustainable mobility, noise control, sustainable agriculture and tourism, and land use planning, among others.

In total, 61 municipalities were honoured for their work in education for sustainability and the promotion of environmental quality. The ECOXXI programme, coordinated by the Blue Flag Association for the Environment and Education (ABAAE), aims to recognise and encourage the work of municipalities in building an increasingly sustainable future.

According to the councillor for the Environment of the Municipality of Baião, Henrique Gaspar Ribeiro, ‘this award recognises Baião’s commitment to sustainability and the quality of life of our citizens. The ECOXXI Green Flag reinforces the importance of the policies and actions we have been implementing to protect our territory, foster environmental education and promote practices that ensure a more sustainable future for generations to come. It’s an incentive for us to continue working with determination for a greener and more sustainable Baião,’ emphasised the mayor.

The ceremony to award the Green Flag took place on 28 November at the Paula Rego House of Stories in Cascais.
