On 29 April, 6 and 13 May, the Environment and Education departments of Baião City Council, through the Environment and Sustainability Unit and the Education Unit of the Municipality, visited part of the mouth of the River Ovil with 10th grade students from the Vale de Ovil School Group. A total of 107 students took part in the activities.
During the visits, the students had the opportunity to check out the natural engineering techniques that have been applied to the requalification of the banks of the River Ovil, identify species of native fauna and flora and recognise some exotic and invasive species. At the end, they took part in an experiment to recognise macroinvertebrates, which are organisms that live at the bottom of rivers, with the aim of identifying the state of health of the river water, since they are bioindicator organisms.
At the mouth of the river, in Ancede, the participants went on a didactic journey, learning in a fun and enthusiastic way about the secrets of the river, its ‘inhabitants’ and how, through the species found there, it is possible to signal the quality of the water.
