As part of its land-use planning strategy, especially in mountain areas, on December 28
Baião Town Council acquired another plot of land with an area of 10,000 m2 in the
Aboboreira mountain range. This plot is in line with the land that was acquired around a
year ago, with an area of 115,000 m2, reinforcing the municipality’s area of
intervention, with a view to “setting up a Forest Intervention Zone (ZIF) in Baião, a
project that we have been working on with leading organizations”, said the mayor,
Paulo Pereira.
The mayor highlighted the importance of the investment, as “another important step in
the context of forest management and the environmental and natural heritage
protection policies that we have been pursuing, towards the sustainability of the
territory, making it ever greener and more resilient in terms of climate change. Our
example could be followed by private individuals, so that we can turn the forest into an
economic sector that enhances its safeguarding and protection,” said the mayor.
Good environmental practices
This acquisition reinforces the implementation of good practices in terms of the
environment and increasing the forest’s resilience to climate change, especially in
terms of fires, but also in terms of reforestation and planning. The land now acquired
will be the target of a planned reforestation action that follows the best techniques in
Portugal, with the planting of native species suited to the altitude and morphology of
the area, distributed in such a way as to create groves, ensuring a discontinuity of
shrubs that is essential to prevent the spread of fires.
The planting will ensure a 60-meter safety strip, guaranteeing the eventual layout of the
primary fuel management strip network.
The councillor responsible for the environment, Henrique Ribeiro, stressed that “this is
yet another investment that reinforces the policies for defending, preserving and
enhancing our forests, one of the pillars of Baião’s development.
In 2021, as part of its land-use planning strategy, the municipality acquired another
27,000 m2 plot of land in the Campelo and Ovil parish union, next to the Fraga do Rio
river leisure area.
