The creation of a new water point to support aerial and ground resources in fighting rural fires has been completed. It is located on Monte de Tuaraz, in the parish of Gôve, on the border with the parish of Grilo.
This investment, worth 35,000 euros, means that the municipality of Baião now has nine strategic water points for supplying firefighting operations, with the new equipment joining the eight already in place:
Serra da Aboboreira (Senhora da Guia, Ovil);
Santa Cruz do Douro (Queixomil);
Gestaçô (Senhora da Graça);
Campelo (Equestrian Centre);
Teixeiró;
Valadares (Ermida);
Loivos do Monte;
Teixeira (Mafómedes).
The Mayor of Baião, Paulo Pereira, highlighted the added value of the new structure, which reinforces the municipality’s commitment to ‘forest protection, fire prevention and the promotion of sustainable development in the territory, while reflecting our commitment to the safety of our population, putting people at the forefront of our action,’ he stressed.
The creation of this new water point, installed on a plot of land of around 24,000 square metres recently acquired by the municipality, responds to a need identified in the 2021-2030 Municipal Forest Fire Protection Plan and in the Tâmega e Sousa Sub-Regional Integrated Rural Fire Management Plan, the latter currently in the approval phase.
The infrastructure was built in accordance with the technical specifications defined in Order No. 5711/2014 of 30 April, measuring 8 metres long by 8 metres wide and 3 metres deep, resulting in a total storage capacity of 192,000 litres of water.
The existing water points in the territory are installed in strategic locations, as set out in the Municipal Forest Fire Defence Plan. These infrastructures play a crucial role in responding to rural fires, ensuring faster action by air and land resources.
