As part of the PAISACTIVO cross-border project, technicians from Baião Town Council are taking part in a technical meeting in Riós, Spain.
This project, which focuses on sustainable land management and fire prevention, will include two pilot projects, one in Almofrela, Baião, and the other in Infesta, Galicia.
The meeting, held under the slogan “we want productive land, not abandoned land”, will focus on explaining and discussing Law 11/2021 – “Recovery of Agricultural Land in Galicia and the Landscape Transformation Programme in Portugal, and its tools”.
Riós is a border municipality, located in the province of Ourense, in the autonomous region of Galicia, with an area of 114.44 km² and around 1500 inhabitants, which results in a low population density in a predominantly rural and forested territory.
This law aims to recover Galicia’s farmland for agricultural, livestock and forestry purposes, encouraging owners to use the land through support that promotes sustainable agricultural practices and active forest management.
PAISACTIVO is a project to enhance the territory, which is in line with Baião’s development policies and forms part of a series of local and regional actions aimed at preserving, promoting and developing its vast natural heritage.
An investment of around 250,000 euros is planned for the village of Almofrela, in the Campelo and Ovil parish union, with the main focus on preserving and boosting it, implementing actions aimed at resilience in the face of forest fires, as well as infrastructural interventions aimed at its requalification and beautification, promoting a stronger sense of belonging on the part of the local community.
