2 services for citizens: Free collection of construction waste and household monsters

The Municipality of Baião has at the disposal of its citizens two free services for the collection of Construction and Demolition Waste (RCD’s) from small domestic repairs and domestic monsters.

1 – Collection of Construction and Demolition Waste

In the activities of construction, reconstruction, expansion, alteration, conservation, and demolition of buildings subject to licensing or prior communication, companies (contractors) are obliged to respect a Waste Prevention and Management Plan, to sort waste by typology and to deliver the waste to companies licensed for this purpose.

For packaging this type of waste, the Municipality of Baião provides citizens with a bag with a capacity of 1 cubic meter, free of charge, whose loan is valid for a period of two months. Subsequently, the bag must be placed in a place with easy access to the collection vehicle (crane truck).

Only waste such as concrete, bricks, tiles, and ceramic materials produced in private works exempt from a license and not subject to prior communication should be deposited.

When the bag is full, the City Council must be contacted, via telephone (255 540 500), email (geral@cm-baiao.pt), or in person at the municipal services, to request its collection.

Empty bags can be picked up at the Parish Councils or at the Santa Marinha do Zêzere and Ancede Citizen Service Points.

2 – Collecting household monsters

The Baião City Council also collects “domestic monsters”, a free service that has existed for a few years, and any citizen can take advantage of it.

“Domestic monsters” are household appliances, electronic equipment, old furniture and sofas, mattresses, and other waste that, given their characteristics or volume, cannot be deposited in recycling bins or in the unsorted waste container. However, they can and should be sent for recycling.

To take advantage of this service, citizens must make a request to the Municipality of Baião, in writing, by e-mail to geral@cm-baiao.pt, by telephone, by number 255540500, or in person. To speed up the process, citizens can bring the completed application available on the municipality’s website.

The collection is carried out on a day and time to be agreed between the municipality services and the citizen and the service is free, as long as it does not exceed 1100L daily. It is important to remember that it is the responsibility of the citizens to transport and pack the bulky waste to a place accessible to the collection vehicle and according to the instructions of the municipal services.

After collection, this waste is deposited at the Baião ecocentre and is under the responsibility of Resinorte S.A., which in turn separates and sorts the waste, sending it to a landfill or for recycling, such as household appliances.
