Baião City Council carried out cleaning and waste collection action

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 and the Baião City Council carried out cleaning and waste collection actions in places where illegal discharges were detected, namely construction waste, “house monsters” and glass.

After visits made by the municipal environmental services to identify the sources of discharges, it was found that they were being carried out at dispersed points, and cleaning actions were carried out between Anquião and Sr.ª da Graça and between Anquião and Tresouras, in several points of the Serra da Aboboreira and in Monte Tuaraz, in Grilo.

According to Councilor for the Environment, Henrique Gaspar, “this type of illegal discharge has decreased in recent years, as the population is increasingly sensitive to environmental issues. It is everyone’s duty to do their part so that these behaviors, so harmful to nature, are no longer a reality, because the fact that we are the municipality with the highest proportion of green areas is something we should be proud of and we have an obligation to preserve”.

In September 2020, the Baião City Council had already carried out a major cleaning action in various parts of the municipality, having collected more than 6 tons of waste at the time. This work is added to the service carried out daily by the garbage collection teams.

COLLECTION OF “DOMESTIC MONSTERS” AND CONSTRUCTION WASTE

The City Council provides two totally free services – the collection of “house monsters” and construction and demolition waste from small domestic repairs.

For packaging construction and demolition waste, the Baião City Council provides citizens with a bag with a capacity of 1 cubic meter, free of charge, whose loan is valid for a period of two months. Subsequently, the bag must be placed in a place with easy access to the collection vehicle.

Only waste such as concrete, bricks, tiles, and ceramic materials produced in private works exempt from a license and not subject to prior communication should be deposited. When the bag is full, the City Council must be contacted for collection.

Regarding “domestic monsters” (appliances, electronic equipment, furniture, old sofas, or mattresses) which, given their characteristics or volume, cannot be deposited in recycling bins or in the unsorted waste container, must be sent for recycling. The collection is carried out on a day and time to be agreed between the municipality services and the citizen and the service is free if it does not exceed 1100L daily.

After collection, this waste is deposited at the Baião ecocentre and is under the responsibility of Resinorte S.A., which in turn separates and sorts the waste, sending it to a landfill or for recycling, such as household appliances.
