Baião Town Council has implemented a series of initiatives to mark the European Week for Waste Reduction, which runs from 16 to 24 November, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. The measures include making sustainable materials available to associations in the municipality, such as reusable cups, recycling bins and ashtrays, as well as installing a drinking fountain in the municipal canteen.
These actions are the result of collaboration between the Associations and Sport and Environment departments, in a joint effort to build a greener future.
The councillor for the Environment, Henrique Gaspar Ribeiro, emphasised the importance of these initiatives, saying that ‘preserving the environment starts with small gestures that, when adopted by the community, make a big difference. With these measures, we want to sensitise citizens and associations in our municipality to the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. Together, we can build a more sustainable borough for future generations,’ he emphasised.
The reusable cups aim to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic, promoting more sustainable habits at events and association activities. The ecopoints aim to facilitate recycling and the correct separation of waste, bringing the municipality into line with national and European environmental targets. The ashtrays were designed to encourage the preservation of public spaces, avoiding the incorrect disposal of cigarette butts, one of the main sources of urban pollution.
The installation of the drinking fountain in the municipal canteen aims to encourage the consumption of tap water and reduce the use of disposable plastic bottles, promoting more sustainable practices in everyday life.
The following materials and equipment were made available as part of these measures:
55 ashtrays;
11510 cups;
42 sets of outdoor recycling bins;
114 indoor recycling bins
