On the 5th of July, the Municipality of Baião delivered to the Volunteer Fire Brigades of Baião and Santa Marinha do Zêzere, new equipment for the elimination of velutina wasp nests.
This new method of intervention is selective and localized. It consists of injecting a solution composed of an attractant for wasps – with an aggregation pheromone, in order to enter their food system – of insecticide and biocide that eliminate the wasps involved in the activity of the nest and, thus, guarantee more effective results.
The great advantages of these new systems are that they allow the elimination of nests at any time of the day and in any type of weather, dispensing with the use of fire and fire prevention means during the burning process, previously used and which only could occur at night.
After intervention, the corporations will mark the nest with an identification plate, however, the nest may remain in place, starting to degrade after a month or so.
Upon delivery of this equipment, the vice-president and councilor responsible for the Civil Protection department, Filipe Fonseca, highlighted that “this new method of combat is environmentally friendly, since it works without chemicals that are harmful to ecosystems and that are approved by official entities.
It is a simpler, faster, more effective and safer process with residual or non-existent environmental impact”.
