The Mayor of Baião, Paulo Pereira, met, on the 30th of January, in Lisbon, with the Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce and Services, Nuno Fazenda, to check the status of the projects developed in recent years , as well as presenting new proposals for valuing the territory, the Baião brand and its assets – mountains, Douro and natural life. A meeting of enormous importance for the county, which has been investing heavily in the sector, which has translated into a sustained growth in the number of tourists and visitors, making Baião one of the main recipients of this sub-region.
Paulo Pereira, who has maintained frequent contact with the authorities over the years, presented Baião as a Sustainable Tourist Destination, internationally recognized and validated certification, and a structuring axis in the municipality’s vision for demanding, quality tourism in line with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations – UN, which combines the environmental, social, economic and cultural pillars. A process known to the Secretary of State who participated in the initial work, integrating a team of international experts, who came to define the criteria for tourist certification of the territories.
Other projects that Baião has been developing in the area of digital nomads, literary tourism, sport, as well as nature and adventure tourism, areas in which the municipality fits in the face of a new strategy implemented by Turismo de Portugal, were also presented. of tourist enhancement of low-density territories.
The Secretary of State for Tourism and the team present at the meeting showed interest in a wide-ranging event, with the Douro River as a backdrop and with a high potential for internationalization, which is being planned and which was also presented.
In turn, the government official launched the challenge for the development of an inter-municipal cultural tourism route involving municipalities in low-density territories and which was well received by the Mayor who stressed “the advances that Baião has shown in the sector, as a result of a strong investment, both in equipment and in wide-ranging cultural actions such as, for example, the Grandes Mestres exhibition”.
