On 8 April, more than a hundred 6th graders from the three school groups in the municipality of Baião took part in an educational and recreational day that took place in the Ancede Leisure Area, specially transformed into an outdoor playground.
The initiative, promoted by Baião Town Council, through the Education sector, in conjunction with the Municipal Civil Protection Services, and the Sports sector, had the main objective of marking World Tree Day, celebrated on 21 March, but which was only now possible due to the weather conditions.
The mayor of Baião, Paulo Pereira, emphasised the importance of celebrating this date ‘in our municipality, whose natural heritage is one of the pillars of its development’, adding that ‘our children’s direct contact with nature is fundamental to raising their awareness of this wealth, so that they become increasingly involved in preserving and enhancing it and become guardians of nature themselves’, he challenged.
Among the various activities organised were the slide, traditional games and paintball, which provided moments of fun and socialising among the participants. The event also included demonstrations of resources and awareness-raising activities organised by the Baião Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Municipal Civil Protection, the GNR’s Nature and Environmental Protection Service and the company Resinorte.
The activity was part of the Annual Activity Plan proposed by the municipality to the school groups, helping to strengthen the connection between children and young people and the natural environment and to promote environmental and civic values.
