Second Forester Sappers Brigade of CIM do Tâmega e Sousa starts activity

The second Forester Sappers Brigade of the Tâmega e Sousa Intermunicipal Community (CIM do Tâmega e Sousa) started its activity on June 1. Consisting of 15 elements, this team will have as main mission the development of preventive silviculture actions, mainly in the maintenance and installation of the primary network for the defense of the forest against fires, post-fire consolidation and emergency stabilization and support for firefighting rural areas, reinforcing the work that has been developed by the other 15 elements of the first brigade.

In this context, it is worth mentioning the creation, in 2018, of the first Forester Sappers Brigade, composed of 14 sappers and a forest engineer, who leads the team and will also assume this second body, in a total of 30 operational, and the constitution of the Intermunicipal Forestry Technical Office of Tâmega e Sousa, that same year.

Like the first brigade, it will also be based at the former Gove primary school in Baião. “It was the understanding of the 11 municipalities to maintain the headquarters of this second brigade in the municipality of Baião, since it was more profitable, from the point of view of the rationalization of resources, having everything concentrated in one place, where we have the facilities and the machines”, justified the Mayor of Baião, Paulo Pereira.

The area of expertise of the two brigades extends to the 11 municipalities that make up the CIM of Tâmega and Sousa, in line with the objectives defined, in the Municipal Plans for the Defense of the Forest Against Fires and, nationally, in the National Strategy for Forests and the National Plan for Integrated Management of Rural Fires.
