Baião is one of the municipalities that has developed the most through Community Funds, according to a study by the University of Aveiro (UA) recently made public. This study uses a methodology that makes it possible to assess the extent to which the European Structural and Investment Funds induce sustainable development in NUTS II municipalities and regions in Portugal, assuming that the impacts on sustainable development (SD) do not result from a programming period/ immediate investment, but before a period of (at least) one cycle to produce some of the expected effects.
The UA investigation started from 55 indicators to assess the variation in the sustainable development of territories in Portugal, between 2014 and 2020, following the investment supported by European Funds, concluding that Baião, as well as the neighboring municipality of Cinfães, are on the line at the forefront of attracting investment to carry out projects that led to an increase in the Dynamic Sustainable Development Index (IDSD).
This index is based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, with which Baião has been aligned, namely as a certified Sustainable Tourist Destination.
The Mayor of Baião, Paulo Pereira, considers the result of the study to be a very positive indicator, stressing that “it proves what we have been referring to, resulting from the policies that the Municipality has followed, with regard to attracting European Funds and Investment and that have allowed structural investments for the future of the municipality”.
