Baião City Council acquires new land with 115,000 m2 and takes new steps in the municipal forest reorganization strategy

The Municipality of Baião acquired a plot of land with 114,394 m2 in the Serra da Aboboreira, for 62,916.70 euros, intended for the consolidation of its territory management strategy, especially in mountain areas.

This policy aims to implement good practices in environmental terms and increase the resilience of the territory’s forest to climate change, especially in terms of fires, but also in terms of reforestation and planning. The land now acquired will be subject to a planned reforestation action that follows the best techniques followed in Portugal. Autochthonous species suitable for the altitude and morphology of the space will be planted, distributed in such a way as to create groves, ensuring an essential discontinuity of shrubs to prevent the spread of fires. The plantation will also ensure a safety strip of 60 meters along the path, guaranteeing the eventual layout of the primary fuel management lane network. For Paulo Pereira, Mayor, “this is yet another action within the scope of land use planning and environmental policies that have been followed by the municipality and which aims to promote the sustainability of the territory, making it increasingly green and resilient on climate change. In this way, we will be setting an example that can also be followed by individuals, contributing to the forest becoming an economic sector that enhances its safeguard and protection”. Betting on an integrated logic of projects and actions at the level of development and land use planning, the mayor considers that “the logical step will be the constitution of a Forestry Intervention Zone (ZIF) in Baião, a project that we have been working with entities of reference and which, I believe, will be soon”

The Councilor for the Environment, Henrique Ribeiro, underlined “another investment that continues one of the pillars of development of Baião and that has in the forest one of the references”. Since the land is in the possession of the municipality, it will enable “a more orderly reforestation with tree species more suited to our territory”, said the councilor.

In 2021, the municipality had already acquired another land with 27 thousand square meters, within the same strategy, next to the river leisure area of Fraga do Rio, in the Union of Parishes of Campelo and Ovil.
