Baião reinforces investment in forest management and land sustainability

The acquisition of a new plot of land in the Serra da Aboboreira brings the area under municipal management to 18.69 hectares.

On 26 February, Baião Town Council acquired a new plot of land in the Serra da Aboboreira, reinforcing its land-use planning strategy, with special attention to mountain areas. This investment, worth 21,773.36 euros, covers an area of approximately 4 hectares, located in the continuity of the plots previously acquired by the municipality.

The Mayor, Paulo Pereira, emphasised that this acquisition reinforces the municipal strategy for forest management, in line with environmental policies and the preservation of natural heritage, promoting a greener and more resilient territory in the face of climate change. ‘This is an example that can be followed by private owners, in order to transform the forest into a sustainable economic asset, capable of ensuring its own protection and enhancement,’ said the mayor.

104,000 INVESTMENT IN FOREST LAND

With this new acquisition, the municipality’s holdings in the Serra da Aboboreira now total 18.69 hectares, representing an accumulated investment of approximately 104 thousand euros. At the same time, the municipality has acquired other plots on the slopes of Serra do Castelo and, recently, a plot of land totalling around 2 hectares on Monte de Tuaraz, in the parish of Gôve. This latest acquisition is aimed at building a water point to support air and land resources in fighting rural fires.

It should be remembered that, as part of its territorial management strategy, in 2021 Baião Town Council acquired a 2.7 hectare plot of land next to the Fraga do Rio River Leisure Area, located in the Campelo and Ovil parish union.

CREATION OF AN INTEGRATED LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT AREA

As part of its land-use planning and resilience initiatives, the municipality has organised several reforestation initiatives in the Serra da Aboboreira. The most recent took place on 22 November, as part of the celebrations for Autochthonous Forest Day. This initiative was aimed at recovering a previously reforested area whose trees were destroyed by the September fires. Various organisations collaborated in the action, including the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), which donated around 3,000 trees. Other interventions are already on the agenda.

In line with the ‘Baião Sustainable Destination’ strategy, the creation of an ‘Integrated Landscape Management Area’ (AIGP), formerly known as a Forest Intervention Zone (ZIF), is currently in the planning stage. This measure aims to respond to the need to manage and organise the landscape, promoting resilience to fires, enhancing the natural heritage and developing the rural economy.
